Blitar – Hello, who would have thought that behind the eerie name “Gondo Mayit Beach,” which means “corpse smell,” hides extraordinary natural beauty on the southern coast of Blitar Regency, East Java.

This beach, located in Krajan Hamlet, Tambakrejo Village, Wonotirto District, is often shrouded in myths and mystical stories, such as the presence of Nyi Roro Kidul (The Queen of the South) and a frightening, musty odor. However, all these assumptions begin to fade when we learn more about the facts.

The myth about the musty odor on this beach actually comes from the aroma of incense and flowers burned in a shrine on the east side of the beach, not the smell of a corpse as is often said. Locals even consider the story of Nyi Roro Kidul to be an exaggerated legend.

Beyond its myth, Gondo Mayit Beach captivates with its soft white sand, clear, turquoise water, and coral reefs that create natural pools.

It is easily accessible via a fairly good asphalt road, and is even accessible by public transportation. Along the way, visitors will be treated to panoramic views of green hills on either side of the road, worthy of a photo op.

The beach’s facilities are quite adequate, including affordable parking, clean restrooms, and free camping. However, the lack of trash cans is a concern.
